Why there are only 1,000 left in the wild
The Iberian Lynx is critically endangered. The number one reason it has become critically endangered is habitat destruction and destruction of it's food web. When European Rabbits were hit with the disease poxvirus myxomatosis their numbers drastically plummeted because the Rabbit had no natural immunity. It's population was nearly obliterated. When the rabbits started to build immunity to myxomatosis, a new disease: viral hemorrhagic pneumonia and knocked down all their progress by killing a large number of adults. These disease outbreaks had detrimental effects to both predator and prey.
Although we don't specifically target the IBerian Lynx, it's killed by traps and snares set for rabbits. Also expanding roads cause there to be a high number of car accidents involving the Iberian Lynx.
